The child fell into the garbage hole full of rain

Charlie Aaron Unwin died on Wednesday when he wandered away from the farmhouse, walked across the driveway and fell in a rubbish hole filled with waste and water from recent rain craft cubes.

A family member who was watching Charlie noticed him missing and went searching for the boy who was found in the flooded dump hole.

Emergency services were called but the child could not be revived.

Police say the hole was not far from the house and was not fenced off.

Farmsafe national manager Grant Hadfield says Charlie's tragic death highlights the need for vigilance when children are on farms.

"One of the problems farmers face is the workplace is their home as well," he told NZ Newswire.

"There's more hazards in a rural kid's environment than a city kid's environment.

"It just reinforces that people need to be very aware of the dangers that face children in a rural environment Warm White LED Bulb."

Police say victim support and other community groups are assisting Charlie's family.

"This is a tragedy for the family and community around this farming location," police said.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment told NZ Newswire it is making preliminary inquiries into the incident.

The ministry advises adults who bring children to farms to walk around with them to identify hazards together and always ensure close and active supervision of young children .

The death has been referred to the coroner.
